PHILOSOPHY

Our approach to the oil and gas business may be what some people would consider old-fashioned. We try to be in places and do things that other operators will not or cannot do because of either financial constraints, the lack of motivation, or vision.

Oil and gas is where you find it, and a lot of it, 54 billion plus barrels worth and trillions of cubic feet of gas, have been found and produced, sold or flared in Texas over the last century. This means it is harder to find, but it also provides a geological imprint or base to work from. Cholla has always been better at taking advantage of other operator’s mistakes, inexperience, and shortsightedness to create new opportunities for itself and its investors.  We like to drill around the edge or below old existing fields, within eye site of tank batteries. In a lot of circumstances, “closeology is still the best geology”! Additionally, we use the tried and true method of sub-surface mapping, along with seismic and geochemical  analysis when appropriate.  H. L. Hunt said – Drill a lot – “Them that drills the most have the most chances to find oil.”  Famous Monty Moncrief said – “Exposure finds the closure.”  Cholla exposes itself to a lot of varied prospects in its area of expertise so that we have more opportunities to find oil and gas.

We like to explore and drill in areas that would not be considered “in vogue”. We do not compete against the majors or even the other large independents in Texas and we do not participate in short term oil field “fads”. We like trendology, closeology, betweenology… whatever works. J. Paul Getty once said his success was based on “rising early, working late, and striking oil”. It seemed to work for him and it  works for us!  We retain over 50% of the working interest on all operated properties or deals, so our money is also at risk.

STRATEGY

Our exploration and production strategy is to continue to enhance our value by leveraging our +45 years of experience and expertise with conventional geology, geophysics, and the application of appropriate technology suitable to the project.

Our ongoing goal is to increase our reserve base on a yearly basis, as well as  for our participating investors, through a focus on mature hydrocarbon basins where we believe under-explored or under-exploited reserves remain in place.  Ours is the tortoise and the hare philosophy – steady wins the race. It is our view that the systematic application of subsurface geology, geophysical, along with seismic and geochemical analysis, when appropriate, can significantly enhance results. Our strategy is to focus on and explore properties that lie within these mature basins which offer oil and gas reserves that would be materially significant to our company and investors.

The components of our exploration strategy are:

  •      Internal generation of exploration and exploitation prospects with special emphasis on
historical and subsurface geological information to identify prospect concepts.

  •      Identification and exploration of under-explored or under-exploited areas in which the application of our experience, technical expertise, and geologic methodologies could significantly impact results.

  •      Our exploration activities are currently focused on the Fort Worth Basin/Bend Arch area of North Central Texas, and the Eastern Shelf of the Permian Basin in West Texas, plus specific ideas in the Sherman-Maryetta Basin of North, Texas.
